The Second Session in a Three-Part Conversation Series at Pine Grove Hall presented by Connect Happy Valley. Inside the Story of Penn State Football with Chris Buchignani Penn State football didn’t begin under stadium lights or on national television. It began in the late 1800s, shaped by students, early coaches, and a growing university finding its footing. This three-part series, spanning 3 evenings in March and April, traces the full story—from its humble origins to the program we know today—following the people, moments, and traditions that gave Penn State football its character. Each session moves forward in time, exploring how the program evolved through changing eras of college football. Along the way, we’ll revisit pivotal games, influential figures, and cultural shifts, while placing Penn State’s story within the broader history of the sport. The focus is on context, storytelling, and the long arc that connects past seasons to the present one. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or simply curious about how a college football tradition is built and sustained, these evenings offer a chance to listen, reflect, and see familiar moments in a new light. Thursday, March 5th - Session 1: Beginnings (1880s–1960s) From the first games played by students to the foundations of a lasting program, this session explores how Penn State football took shape in its earliest decades. Saturday, April 4th: Session 2: Growth, Identity, and National Recognition (1960s–1990s) An era defined by expansion, rising expectations, and the moments that carried Penn State onto the national stage. Thursday, April 30th: Session 3: Modern Penn State Football (1990s–Present) Tradition meets change as we examine recent history, evolving challenges, and how the past continues to influence the program today. Led by Chris Buchignani, a longtime Penn State journalist and historian, the series blends historical insight with conversation and reflection—designed to feel as much like a shared evening at Pine Grove Hall as a deep dive into the game’s enduring story. Dinner and full bar service are available before and throughout the evening. Held in our upstairs listening room. No handicapped access. This is a Connect Happy Valley event.
